Agroecology applies the principles of ecology to the design and management of sustainable food systems.

What that means in practice is that farmers and researchers work together to develop farming practices that enhance soil fertility, recycle nutrients, optimize the use of energy and water and, perhaps most important, increase the beneficial interactions of organisms with and within their ecosystems.

This course provides the historical background expounding the detrimental aspects of chemical farming, participants shall be able to discuss the root causes of the pesticide problem and the various approaches in addressing the problem. Furthermore, they shall agree on the fundamental principles of Alternative Pest Management as the most viable and appropriate solution in agricultural production.

m        Identify the significant stages in the history Green Revolution and its impact to the peoples health, farmers socio-economic conditions and the environment, as well as agricultural policies in the Third World context; and


m        Discuss the fundamental framework, principles, strategies and approaches of the various agricultural alternatives, after the discussion on the APM program in comparison with IPM and conventional approaches.
